Here at Walk into Luxury, we love the idea of combining the best of nature with gourmet food and wine and luxury accommodation on a multi-day walk. What better way is there to truly experience the best of a destination.  Australia and New Zealand are leading the way with this type of experience-based, eco-tourism holiday.  Here are our picks of the best luxury walks in Australia and New Zealand.

  1. Great Walks of Australia – There are currently 9 Great Walks which represent the best guided walking experiences in Australia combined with the highest quality food and wine and luxury touches. There are several Great Walks in Tasmania – think the Bay of Fires Walk and Cradle Mountain Huts Walk which feature exclusive lodge and hut accommodation.  There is also the 12 Apostles Lodge Walk in Victoria, the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory and Arkaba Walk in the Flinders Ranges.  The newest Great Walks of Australia are the Scenic Rim Walk by Spicers in Queensland – which includes accommodation at its exclusive glamping set-up as well as at its mountain-top luxury lodge – and Walk into Luxury’s own 4 day Margaret River Cape to Cape Walk which features luxury villa accommodation overlooking the Indian Ocean and award winning Margaret River food and wine.
  2. Ultimate Hikes NZ – Ultimate Hikes offers guided walking tours on the Milford Track and Routeburne Track, two of the Great Walks of New Zealand (which get their own mention below). Combining spectacular alpine hiking with hot showers, comfortable accommodation and light day packs, these luxury walks are a great way to experience this stunning part of New Zealand.
  3. Three Capes Track – this is a brand new 46 km walk between three Capes in Tasmania’s south-eastern corner, which is drawing attention for its world class track infrastructure and well-designed hut to hut accommodation. With limited walkers permitted on the track each day, the huts make for a relaxing and scenic base to end each day and get to know fellow hikers. We expect this will become a favourite amongst keen Aussie walkers.
  4. Great Walks of New Zealand – NZ’s Great Walks are a selection of trails designated by the Dept of Conservation (DOC) and known for the DOC huts which make for comfortable accommodation after a hard day’s walk. What they lack in 5 star wow factor, these walks more than make up with well-maintained tracks and infrastructure and picture perfect scenery.  If you are looking for something slightly more indulgent, we recommend hiking the Queen Charlotte Track in the Marlborough region of the South Island and staying in a mix of lodges dotted along the track.  Bay of Many Coves Resort (a Luxury Lodge of New Zealand) is our pick of the bunch, or try Furneaux Lodge if you are hiking with kids.

So there you have it, our list of luxury hikes that are sure to bring you round to our way of walking. Happy tramping!
