As our name suggests, Walk into Luxury is all about two things: 1) Hiking along Western Australia’s most scenic walking trails, and 2) sampling the finest local cuisine and luxury accommodation in Australia’s South West.
Our recipe for an excellent tour is to serve up a healthy blend of hiking and treating our guests to the gourmet delights the South West region is renowned for, which is why we love Margaret River Gourmet Escape!
International culinary stars will converge on Margaret River next month for Gourmet Escape 2017 – Margaret River’s iconic four-day food and wine festival. There will be a range of events that will showcase regional produce and wines, from the Gourmet Village at Leeuwin Estate to exclusive dinners featuring celebrity chefs. Here, we outline our top pick of events taking place over the 4-day festival.
Margaret River Gourmet Escape will officially open at the Audi Gourmet Beach Barbecue to be held at Castle Rock Beach on Thursday, 16 November. Gourmet Beach Barbecues will be held during lunch and dinner throughout the festival, so there will be plenty of opportunities to enjoy free-flowing beverages and sumptuous cuisine served up by celebrity chefs, including Curtis Stone, Rick Stein, Peter Kuruvita, Josh Niland and Shane Delia. This is our top pick of the festival’s events, as it offers a fabulous blend of top quality cuisine at one of the region’s most picturesque coastal locations in a laid-back environment with live music.
Another event that has piqued our interest is The Twilight Cape Cultural Tour and Native Barbecue at Cape Naturaliste. Located at the northern tip of the Cape to Cape Track, Cape Naturaliste is one of the most beautiful and culturally interesting locations in the Margaret River Region, and is a highlight on our most popular tour, the 4-Day Margaret River Cape to Cape Walk. Local Wadandi man, Josh Whiteland – of award-winning, Koomal Dreaming – will host this event, which will include a 2.5-km walk around Cape Naturaliste and a casual barbecue around a campfire featuring seasonal native foods and flavours, accompanied by local beer and wine. View a display of artifacts, listen to dream-time stories and enjoy a didgeridoo performance at this intimate event. We know this event will be a winner, as Josh plays the didgeridoo and shares his knowledge with guests on our Cape to Cape Walk tours.
Wine buffs will be well catered for at this year’s festival. 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of wine production in the Margaret River Region, so it’s fitting that Margaret River Gourmet Escape will celebrate this milestone by bringing the UK’s world-renowned wine critic, Jancis Robinson (OBE, MW) to events across the weekend. Some of the wine events we’d recommend attending include: Cape Mentelle International Cabernet Tasting and Long Lunch; the Cullen Wines 32nd International Chardonnay Tasting and fringe events such as the 50 Years in the Making tasting at Vasse Felix and the Leeuwin Art Series Dinner.
Some of the other events that sound amazing include: the Great Soiree at Fraser Gallop Estate, The High Life with Paul Iskov (a helicopter lunch!) and the official closing party at Gnarabup’s White Elephant Café.
We also recommend heading down to Gourmet Village at Leeuwin Estate on Saturday, 18 or Sunday, 19 November to see celebrity chefs in action, sample local produce and enjoy the festival atmosphere.
After filling up on local produce, you may well feel inclined to burn some calories and see the sights along the Cape to Cape or Bibbulmun Track. View our range of walking tours and add a few to your bucket list – a fine way to reduce the guilt of overindulging at the festival!
Smiths Beach Resort is offering some excellent accommodation and event packages for the festival. Margaret River Gourmet Escape tickets are available through Ticketek.
